Charles R. Yancy (ca. 1801-1860), originally a Virginian, was known as "Bullet" Yancy for his single, jet-black eye. A Chapel Hill doctor and alcoholic, he rode through the streets late at night "singing the virtues of the patriots and of ‘corn-cob whiskey'" (Vickers 42). Prosperous and married three times, his household included a deaf-mute brother Lemuel and a sister Frances.
